Apprentice Matthew joins the HRC Marketing team
Matthew Wheeler, the new Business Administration and Marketing Apprentice for Huntingdonshire Regional College, is a young man with big ambitions.
Coming from a deaf family where only his twin sister is fully hearing, Matthew is partially deaf and has worked hard to overcome the challenges that this presents.
He attended the College as a Business learner and qualified in July 2015.
His abilities and determination shone through during his studies, culminating in him receiving HRC’s Business Learner of the Year award for 2014/15.
Matthew developed a particular interest in marketing from his course and when the vacancy arose within the College’s Marketing department he grasped the opportunity with both hands.
Matthew said: ““I’m very lucky because I decided I wanted to have a career in marketing when I was at this College and now I am an apprentice in this sector at this College.
“I believe that an apprenticeship suits me more than attending university. Being an apprentice, you are learning from the experienced heads and being guided carefully whilst gaining valuable skills and experience.”
Matthew’s talents extend beyond his chosen career field to the football field.
He has been shortlisted to represent Great Britain senior deaf team at the World Cup in Italy in July and the Under 21’s Euro Championship that takes place in Poland in August 2016.
Matthew said: ““We have seven training weekends coming up all over the UK until August, so it’s vital for me to eat clean and work hard on and off the pitch with the right attitude to ensure I am on that plane to Poland.
“I doubt there is a greater feeling than representing your country which is why I am so determined.”
In the meantime, Matthew will be concentrating on his new Apprenticeship role and the projects that lie ahead.
He added: “I’m looking forward to working with those around me and gaining important skills, experience and knowledge.”
