UPS learners visit Peterborough Prison

Uniformed Public Services learners at Huntingdonshire Regional College were allowed behind closed doors at Peterborough Prison recently to learn about the daily life of prisoners and find out what it takes to be a prison officer.
Six learners were involved in the visit which included a tour of the wings and education facilities followed by the opportunity to speak to a group of prisoners about life at the prison.
The next stop was the Incident Control Suite where the learners discovered more about the role of the prison officers before having the opportunity to complete an exercise on Incident Management from the professional training manual.
David Fleming, Head of Performance for Sodexo Justice Services, said: “It was a pleasure to host and support a visit for the students. They were very inquisitive and had the opportunity to speak to a number of residents who gave explained the impact of prison on their families and how they coped with coming into custody.
“The students really engaged well and were excellent ambassadors for the College and HMP Peterborough can support future visits of this kind for other students.”
Jonathan Budd, a learner who attended the visit, said: “It was an interesting and informative day. It was very interactive and I got a lot out of it.”
